Best Ways to Mask the Bitter Taste of Medicine

November 1, 2021 by M.Hari Kumar

It is crucial for many people to take medication on a daily basis but the taste of medicine can be very unpleasant for some.

Bitter taste of medicine is a common ailment that many people face when they take their medications. To mask the taste, there are a few methods that people can use.

Taste Masking

The bitter taste of medicine is not something that is looked forward to. However, with the help of Pharma solutions, this can be alleviated. Pharmaceutical companies have been coming up with different flavors and tastes to make sure that their medicines can be consumed without any fuss. This is a huge market and the numbers are only going to increase in the future.

Companies around the world are using different techniques to mask the bitter taste of medicine with the use of different flavorings, coatings and suspension agents.

Utilizing Other Favorable Flavors

There are a few other techniques that can also be used to mask the taste of medicine, depending on the type of medicine and patient preference. For instance, people who have a hard time swallowing pills can chew on a piece of gum or suck on a hard candy. They can also suck on lemon wedges or eat pieces of apple.

Placing a tablespoon of honey in your mouth and then taking your medication may cause you to associate the bad taste with the sweet taste making taking your medications a bit more tolerable.

Chew on Gum

Chewing sugarless gum after taking medication can also be useful. The chewing will stimulate saliva production and may help wash out some of the bitter taste in your mouth, as well.

Take it in a Different Form

Another useful method to mask the unpleasant taste of medicine is by taking it in a different form. Speaking with your doctor about what other forms are available in the medication you are prescribed can be a simple solution.

Many medications are also offered in capsule or liquid form, both of which are typically tasteless or a bit more preferable.

Dissolve the Medication in a Liquid

You will need to speak with your pharmacist or doctor before utilizing this method as some medications are made in a specific form so that they are broken down in a specific location meaning that dissolving the medication may not always be appropriate.

However, after speaking with your provider and determining that your medication is in fact able to be dissolved, opt for dissolving in a liquid that you enjoy drinking such as lemonade, fruit punch, or another type of flavored drink.

Talk to Your Doctor

If taking medications are becoming unpleasant and unattainable, it’s time for you to speak with your doctor or pharmacist. It’s important to comply with your prescribed medications as there is a reason you should be taking them.

Instead of opting not to take medications due to their taste, communicating with your doctor or pharmacist about the problems you are experiencing while taking medications may be easily resolved through a few simple recommendations.
